Swift Boxes

Supporting urban wildlife by providing safe nesting homes for swifts.

Background

The Swift Boxes project focused on enhancing habitat opportunities for local swift populations — iconic migratory birds that find nesting space increasingly scarce in modern towns.

Drogheda Tidy Towns worked with volunteers and local partners to install specially designed nesting boxes on buildings throughout the town, helping swifts thrive in an urban setting.

Why It Was Needed

Swifts are remarkable birds that spend most of their lives in flight, returning each year to the same nesting sites. Unfortunately, changes in building design and renovation have reduced available nesting spots, leaving these birds with fewer safe places to raise their young.

The Swift Boxes initiative was created to:

  • Protect and support urban swift populations

  • Increase nesting opportunities in key areas of Drogheda

  • Raise awareness of local biodiversity and species conservation

By installing purpose-built boxes, the project aimed to make a meaningful contribution toward species protection in a town environment.

Project Delivery

Volunteers and supporters were involved in:

The project ensured that each installation was carefully placed to benefit the birds without interfering with residents or building functions.

Outcomes

The Swift Boxes project achieved positive results:

By embracing practical conservation action, Drogheda Tidy Towns helped create a more wildlife-friendly urban environment — showing how small interventions can deliver real ecological benefits.

Why It Matters

Urban areas often lack the natural cavities and ledges swifts historically used for nests. Projects like Swift Boxes help fill that gap — supporting species that have coexisted with humans for generations, while fostering community connection to nature right where people live.
