TidyTowns is a great way for civic spirited people in Drogheda to come together, to harness their ideas and energy and to help make a real difference!
Drogheda Tidy Towns was set up by local volunteers in 2007 to make Drogheda a better place to live, work, and visit.
From the very beginning, our aim has been to create a cleaner, greener, and more welcoming town, encouraging pride in our community and working together to protect and enhance Drogheda for everyone.
Our strength and success lie in partnership. We collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, from Louth County Council and, more recently, with the continued expansion of Drogheda, Meath County Council, Councillors, Resident Groups, TUS, Schools, businesses, and a large range of community groups, organisations, and individuals. We rely on these relationships and support to help us succeed.
At the core of our work is a commitment to action to keep Drogheda clean and litter-free. Volunteers are out in force year-round, engaging in litter picking, planting, painting, and maintaining public spaces.
These efforts significantly supported by the TUS team ( a program we sponsor and set up with the help of Louth Local Development team in 2022).
Our focus is not only to improve the physical environment but also to foster a sense of ownership and pride in the community.
Over the years, Drogheda Tidy Towns has been proud to lead and contribute to a variety of impactful projects that have enhanced our town’s environment and community spirit. A standout initiative is the Joe Stanley 1916 Gardens project, established in 2016 as a key part of the 1916 centenary celebrations and Drogheda Tidy Towns did further work on these gardens in 2025 and 2026.
In 2022, we led a significant improvement project of improvements in Glen Park in Yellow batter planting orchards, replanting the embankment, improving the entrances, adding new fences, benches, bee hotels, and information signage. In 2023, we partnered with Irish Rail and local residents to plant the Dublin Road railway embankment with pollinator-friendly planting and added the “Gateway to the Boyne Valley” mural by artist Ciarán Dunlevy.
More recently, in 2024, we undertook the Old Cement Quarry biodiversity study, culminating in the publication of “Other Nations,” a detailed biodiversity report celebrating this magnificent site and also establishing the Old Quarry Way 5k loop walk experience. This was followed by “Other Nations 2,” a similar study focusing on the Boyne Estuary and Marshland, complemented by informative public signage to engage, inform, and educate.
In 2025, we commissioned and installed 2 sculptures on the Southgate roundabouts as you approach Drogheda from the South, and we also refurbished the 1896 Drogheda Historic Boundary stones, a key part of the town’s history and heritage. We have worked with the Stepping Stone Forests group, local schools, residents, and community groups to plant 6 mini urban forests comprising of 3,500 native Irish trees across Drogheda in 2026.
These and many other projects detailed on this website exemplify our commitment to working collaboratively with people, businesses, and organisations across Drogheda to create lasting positive change. We look to all opportunities of grant funding locally and nationally to enable many of these projects as well as other support from local business for match funding where required.
Each year, we proudly submit an application to the National Tidy Towns competition on behalf of Drogheda. Our efforts, supported by all the work done by so many more, have led to year-on-year improvements in our scores and the remarkable achievement of 18 Gold Medals. These accolades are a testament to the dedication of volunteers and the collective will of our community and stakeholders.
We have in place a 5-year rolling strategic plan to guide our work for the months and years ahead. Guided by our mission and this strategy, we will continue to work with all in the community for a brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable future for Drogheda.
Drogheda Tidy Towns endeavours to promote the core principles of a clean and tidy town where people enjoy living, working, and visiting.
The Committee seeks to engage with all stakeholders, including Louth and Meath County Councils, residential groups, the education, business, community and volunteer sectors, to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach to the environment, area enhancement, litter management, biodiversity, sustainability, and improvements to the public realm, including parks and shared spaces.
Through careful planning, community involvement and sustainable action, we work to enhance all areas of Drogheda, from streetscapes and residential neighbourhoods to green spaces, approach roads and natural habitats, ensuring a cleaner, greener and more welcoming town for all.
Being a volunteer with Drogheda Tidy Towns allows individuals to practice their passion for the good of their community, whether that passion concerns the built environment, landscaping, sustainable living, and local wildlife or organizing a litter pick; there is a place for it in Drogheda Tidy Towns.
We encourage volunteers to come and work together to make our wonderful town of Drogheda be the very best it can be. We can only do this with your help.
