The River Boyne is one of Ireland’s most iconic waterways, rich in history, culture, and biodiversity. Flowing across counties and through the heart of our town, the Boyne not only shapes the landscape but supports wildlife, recreation, and community life in Drogheda.
However, this invaluable natural resource faces real environmental challenges that need ongoing attention and care.
The Boyne is more than a river. It’s part of our heritage and ecosystem. It:
Despite its beauty and importance, litter, pollution, and dumped waste remain persistent issues along the river and its estuary.
These problems harm wildlife, diminish water quality, and reduce the enjoyment of the river for residents and visitors alike.
At Drogheda Tidy Towns we’re committed to protecting the Boyne through hands-on cleanup events, community partnerships, and environmental advocacy. Some of our ongoing efforts include:
Volunteers gather to remove litter, debris, and hazards from the river and banks.
Protecting the tidal reaches and wildlife of the Boyne estuary through coordinated effort.
Working with groups like Boyne Fisherman Recovery & Rescue, WRI Wildlife Hospital volunteers, local clubs and residents.
We attended Boyne Vision, a consultation led by the Boyne Rivers Trust and local universities to better understand river health and future protection strategies.
Thanks to our volunteers and partners:
Major clean-up events have removed tons of litter and harmful debris from riverbanks and water.
Unwanted items like discarded shopping trolleys, which can trap wildlife and contaminate water, have been actively recovered from the river.
Ongoing estuary clean-ups and wildlife rescue support efforts continue to protect vulnerable species.
Protecting the Boyne is a shared responsibility. Here’s how you can get involved:
Whether you can volunteer your time, support our projects, or simply spread the word, every effort helps us keep Drogheda clean, green, and thriving.
