Celebrating community, culture & mythology at Drogheda’s gateway.
The Southgate Sculptures mark the southern gateway into Drogheda and the wider Boyne Valley. Created through strong community collaboration, they celebrate local heritage, mythology and shared identity — welcoming residents, visitors and everyone passing through Southgate.
“It has been an honour to work with Drogheda Tidy Towns to create these pieces… I wanted The Well of Wisdom and Boann, Goddess of the Boyne to reflect the beauty, history, and spirit of our community.”
The goal: to commission two connected sculptures for the Colpe roundabouts near Southgate Shopping Centre, reflecting Southgate as the gateway to the Boyne Valley and the historic walled town of Drogheda.
Meath County Council supported the project from the outset. In early 2023, the group moved into a formal two-stage commissioning process, reviewing many artist submissions. In December 2023, the commission was awarded to award-winning local Meath artist Breda Marron for two works:
Inspired by the legendary Segais Well, this piece explores themes of knowledge and mythology, using swirling spirals and bird motifs that echo the lifeblood of the River Boyne.
A graceful form symbolising the river’s timeless journey and the unity of communities. Her cloak transforms into two embracing swans — representing love, transformation, and connection between Drogheda, East Meath and the wider Boyne Valley.
Whether you can volunteer your time, support our projects, or simply spread the word, every effort helps us keep Drogheda clean, green, and thriving.
